认识不久的一位和我同样是"Youth"的粉丝的朋友推荐的，超级经典，出自罗素自传的Prologue, 在此和大家分享。

The Prologue to Bertrand Russell's Autobiography

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what--at last--I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

几天前为家宝的话感动了一番，蓦然发现某些官方喉舌(包括著名的日人民报网站)都把温总的话阉割得不成样子了……

无语中。不过这在当下的中国也是common practice，吐啊吐啊也就习惯了。

Just got the email. It certainly comes as a pleasant surprise!

Dear Alumni,

I'm most delighted to let you know that the Lee Shau Kee Foundation
Limited has generously pledged HK$400 million to our University in
support of our development as a global leader in education and research.

Council Chairman Dr John Chan and I would receive the cheque from Dr Lee
Shau Kee at a ceremony to be held later this afternoon at Dr Lee's
Office.

This magnificent donation is a major boost to help us achieve our shared
dream of turning our University into a world class institution that
would make significant contribution locally, nationally, and
internationally in teaching and research.

In recognition of Dr Lee's generous support, we will name our new campus
now being developed the "Lee Shau Kee Campus", name a building on the
new campus that would house the HKUST Business School and other academic
units the "Lee Shau Kee Business Building", and honor Dr Lee as a
Founding Patron of the Institute for Advanced Study at HKUST.

The new campus of HKUST is located atop the main campus. It is scheduled
for opening in 2012, to tie in with the conversion to the 4-year degree
system. Planning for our campus development project is now underway and
I should be able to brief you within a couple of months on our exciting
plans.

題目貌似很高深，其實寫的就是crowd psychology。"冧巴"就是"Number"。文章是用白話寫的，適合略通粵語及對股市感興趣者。

稀里糊涂地被选上了CityU的Staff Association(城大唯一的faculty&staff组织)的Vice Chairperson, 工作范围是protect the benefits of research staff. 我enjoy在这个组织里工作，不仅仅因为I got the chance to speak up, 而且确实可以do something for my dear colleagues!

中午开会，再一次阐述research staff benefits的真空状态：缺乏归属感，人工太低，无组织。赢得热烈响应。准备同管理层对话。

但也错过了看温总本届政府的最后一次talk show。

看了文字，激动地泪水哗哗的。

不管如何，感谢家宝，敢于在此等场合掷地有声地说：

"民主、法制、自由、人权、平等、博爱……是人类共同追求的价值观。"

"在平等、公正和自由的环境下，让每一个人都得到全面的发展；……发挥人的创造精神和独立思维的能力。"

"让正义成为社会主义制度的首要价值。"

不管是不是作秀，单凭这些话，我要说，家宝好样的！在当下内地近乎人吃人的资本原始初级积累阶段，温总的话似一缕清风。

最后附上那张著名的照片。温总说他没看过赵紫阳在香港出的书，但我相信他对赵的想法一定不会陌生。

因为，那是普世价值。
